How much does publishing an application on an app store cost?

In this post, we will solve one of our customers’ most frequently asked questions and analyse the rates of the most popular app stores: Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore.

Publishing your application on these platforms can have significant advantages: On the one hand, these mass-use platforms offer you greater reach and visibility. On the other hand, they generate greater user confidence in your app and allow you to promote your applications and reach a wider audience.

But you must know that this is not free and that app stores, like any other intermediary, have a fee.

Below, we analyse the commission fee of publishing on Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Amazon Appstore.

How much does publishing an application on the Google Play Store cost?

  • Google charges a $25 fee to register and create an application developer account, which is required to publish apps in the shop. This fee is only payable once, and if we upload more applications from this account, we will not need to pay this fee again.

Please, keep this in mind! This commission fee is reduced to 15% for subscribers you keep after they have paid for 12 months.

This affects solely and exclusively services that use Google’s platform to manage subscriptions, not games and applications that generate revenue through microtransactions.

  • A fixed transaction commission fee of 30% of the revenue generated by the app.

Conclusion: A fee of $25 (about €22) + 30% of the revenues.

How much does publishing an application on the Apple App Store cost?

  • • You must be registered as a developer to publish on Apple App Store. To do so, you must pay an annual fee depending on the membership and developer category you are registered in. Membership options offered by Apple:
    • A basic membership, the most common as an iOS developer, consists of a $99 per year fee charged by Apple to register and upload an unlimited number of apps.
    • A more advanced Apple Developer Company membership, with an annual fee of $299, allows large organisations to develop and deploy proprietary applications for internal use by their employees.

Who is this option recommended for?

This programme is for specific use cases requiring private direct distribution to employees via secure internal systems or a mobile device management solution.

This fee has to be renewed annually.

  • Like Google, it has a fixed transaction fee, depending on the revenue generated:
    • 30% of the app’s revenue is generated if the developer generates more than $1 million yearly (understood as revenue after subtracting the commission).
    • 15% of the app’s revenue is generated if the developer generates less than $1 million yearly.

How much does publishing an application on the Amazon App Store cost?

  • Unlike Apple and Google, there is no registration fee. It is free to publish.
  • But it does have a fixed transaction fee that will depend on the revenue generated by developers on an annual basis:
    • So If the developer earns less than $1 million: You will be required to pay 20% of the revenue generated, and Amazon will provide you with a promotional credit on AWS equal to 10% of your income.
    • In other words, if you are a developer and take advantage of these credits, the equivalent of a 90-10 split is 90% for the developer and 10% for Amazon.
    • Suppose the developer earns more than $1 million: a fixed transaction of 30% of the revenue generated by the app. Unlike Apple and Google, there is no registration fee.

Fixed commission on revenues from applications:

In previous sections, we analysed the fixed commission rate charged by the different shops on the revenue generated by the app, but what is this transaction fee applied?

Note that revenue commissions generated by the app in all stores apply as long as you are not selling a physical good (e.g. clothing or an object).

The fee applies:

  • On revenue generated from in-app purchases:

In-app purchases (IAP) include any transaction made within the application (except the purchase of physical goods), e.g., a flight in a travel application. If you use in-app advertising as an application monetisation strategy, app shops cannot charge you for it.

  • Revenues generated from subscription payments.
  • Revenues generated from downloading paid applications.
